Officer suffers head injuries in one of two police crashes in Miami

Two City of Miami Police officers were involved in separate car crashes Friday morning as they were responding to assist another officer who needed emergency assistance.

The first crash happened sometime around 7:30 a.m. in the area of Northeast 1st Avenue and 6th Street, as the officer was responding to the emergency at North Miami Avenue and 8th Street, according to Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes.

Reyes said the officer, who was identified as Raynier Rodriguez, 31, was traveling in emergency mode westbound on Northeast 6th Street when he collided with a black Audi traveling northbound on Northeast 1st Avenue.

Both Rodriguez and the driver of the Audi were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Unit, where they were both treated and released. Reyes said Rodriguez suffered head injuries and possible broken bones, while the other driver suffered minor injuries.

In the second crash, Officer Josue Herrera, 35, struck a pole in the area of Northwest 1st Avenue and 11th Street, Reyes said. No other cars were involved and the officer wasn't hurt.

Reyes didn't say what emergency assistance was needed. The drivers weren't identified.
