Two Whales Die After Beaching in North Florida

Wildlife officials say a mother Kogia whale and her calf are dead after beaching themselves on Neptune Beach.

Marine biologist Allison Perna says someone spotted the whales Sunday morning and called the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Florida Times-Union reports two biologists from the wildlife commission and a team from the Jacksonville Zoo marine mammal response team tried unsuccessfully to rescue the whales.

Biologists will perform a necropsy to determine what led to the beaching.
