2 Women Shot in Miami Gardens Home

A nine-year-old girl hid in a closet as her mother and aunt were shot inside a Miami Gardens house Wednesday evening.

The first sign that anything was wrong was when the child came running out of the house. She ran to a gas station next door and a worker there said he found her crying saying her mother and aunt had been shot.

Miami Gardens Police said two women were shot in the house in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue; one was shot in the arm and the other in the chest. Both are expected to survive, police said. Investigators believe the shooting may have been a case of domestic violence.

“An ex-boyfriend or something, the little girl said her mom got shot in her arm, two people got shot,” said Tony, the worker at the gas station who found the girl. “She looked scared and that was my concern, was to make sure she was alright.”

Neighbors said the shooting left them “terrified.”

“They (kids) wanted to know what was going on, should they go in the house, what to do mommy, we’re scared,” said neighbor Toni Sample.

Miami Gardens Police said they're looking for 60-year-old Bert Artie Smith in connection with the shooting.

If you have any information about the shooting, call Miami Gardens Police or Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
