University of Miami Student Killed in Car Crash: Cops

The crash happened early Sunday morning.

A University of Miami student was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning, according to Coral Gables Police.

The crash occurred by the campus on Bird Road at San Amaro Drive, officials said.

The student was identified as Dino Ghilotti, a business major, in a statement from the university.

"The entire university community is heartbroken to hear of the tragic traffic accident which resulted in the death of a UM student who just celebrated his graduation on Friday," said UM president Donna Shalala in a statement.

Ghilotti was going to join his family's construction business, the statement said.

Authorities said Allison Meyer was driving the car. Ghilotti was removed from the back seat, according to Rosalia Prado, the driver of the other car. She said she called police.

Prado said that after work at BT's Gentlemen's Club, she was driving home east on Bird Road when suddenly the other car appeared. They crashed and her car went into a tree.

Prado said she wasn't sleeping or on drugs or alcohol, and she said she has hospital tests prove it. She has a broken wrist.

She also said she feels for the Ghilotti family and their loss.

"They were trying to resuscitate the guy who was laying right next to the car and it was obvious they weren't successful," Rodaz said. "He was just lying there motionless."

A memorial was held at St. Augustine Catholic Church Monday at 5 p.m.

"The family is going through a devastating loss. They are very appreciative of people’s thoughts and prayers," a spokesperson for the Ghilottis said in a statement.

The family will be returning to Marin County in California for services there, the spokesperson said.

Police are investigating the crash.
