Department of Transportation Orders Suspension of All Passenger and Cargo Flights Between the United States and Venezuela

The United States Department of Transportation has ordered the suspension of all passenger and cargo flights between the US and Venezuela citing safety and security concerns.

The move was announced in a department letter released Wednesday that said the Department of Homeland Security concluded that "conditions in Venezuela threaten the safety and security of passengers, aircraft, and crew traveling to or from that country."

The letter said the decision was reached based on the civil unrest and violence in and around the airport, the inability of TSA to gain access to Venezuelan airports to conduct security assessments, and the "current economic and political crisis" in the country.
