New Year's Day

Video Shows ‘Distraction Theft' That Caused Lockdown Inside Sawgrass Mills

Sunrise Police released video of what they are calling a “distraction theft” on New Year’s Eve where two men made off with a watched valued at over $11,000.

Shortly after 4 p.m. last Sunday, a man can be seen entering the Zales jewelry outlet inside Sawgrass Mills mall before asking an employee to see a Rolex watch.

As the man is inside the store, police say a second man set off fireworks outside, causing a chaotic situation and allowing the man with the watch to escape.

Officers responded to reports that shots were fired inside the mall, but that was later proven to be a false call after the mall was placed on lockdown for close to an hour.

Anyone with information on the two men or the watch – which has the model number 1626 located between the lugs near the wristband – are advised to call Broward CrimeStoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
