Virgin Voyages announced Wednesday it will build a terminal for a fleet of new cruise ships at PortMiami.
The terminal will be home to the Scarlet Lady, a new, adult-only cruise ship that will arrive in Miami in 2020, in addition to another ship already in the works.
Virgin founder Richard Branson said Miami was a clear choice as the cruise capital of the world and because of its access to Cuba.
The mayor of Miami-Dade welcomed Virgin's plans that they assure will generate more local jobs at PortMiami, which already provides hundreds of thousands of jobs in South Florida.
The Miami-Dade commission must approve the plans for the terminal by Tuesday. If approved, the terminal should be completed before the end of 2021, and tickets for the cruises would start by Feb. 14.
