Water Main Break Causes Sinkhole at Hialeah Intersection

A water main break caused a large sinkhole to begin forming at an intersection in Hialeah Tuesday, officials said.

The break happened near the intersection of West 4th Avenue and West 29th Street when a private contractor that was digging in the area ruptured the water main line, Hialeah Police officials said.

The break caused a significant amount of water to spill over the roadway and caused the sinkhole, which was continuing to expand, officials said.

"At this point we are increasing the water pressure coming out from our Hialeah Water treatment plant and at area pump stations throughout the northern portion of the county to mitigate any possibility of residents feeling or noticing any lower than normal water pressure," Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer spokeswoman Jennifer Messemer-Skold said.

The intersection was shut down. Officials said it may take two weeks to repair the break.
