‘We Are Offended': Family of Corey Jones Demanding Justice for His Death

The extended family of Corey Jones is demanding answers regarding their loved one's death. Thursday marked 150 days since the South Florida drummer was gunned down on the side of the road by a plainclothes officer. While an investigation is underway, his family says they want faster results.

"We are offended personally that it has taken this long. Where is this kind of process before the gun is fired?" Rev. Keith Moore expressed.

At a news conference, Jones' family and the community said they're still looking for answers. He was shot and killed by Palm Beach Gardens Officer Nouman Raja in October 2014. Raja was fired but no charges have been filed against him.

"I'm sick of the police killing our kids. I'm done with that," said Gail Banks Allen, Jones' aunt.

After almost five months, Jones' grandfather said, despite an ongoing investigation, they shouldn't have to wait any longer for answers and retribution.

"It could be my son, it could be your son, just so sad. We have not gotten the justice that Corey deserves," said Sylvester Banks, Sr. "You have an officer in your capacity, which he has done wrong. Isn't it right for you to chastise him? Why should he go free? Why does it take this long to do what's right?"

The deadly encounter happened on the side of I-95 in Palm Beach County. Jones' car had broken down as he left a church gig, when Officer Raja approached him, apparently shooting him several times. Jones, who was from Boynton Beach, was armed at the time.

The press conference brought together an array of people, from organizations against bullying to victim rights to voting rights activists to mothers who've lost their children to gun violence.

"Mothers Against Murder are behind the Corey Jones family 100 percent. I've lost 16 family members to gun violence, and we're going to stand with you all and do what we need to get justice for this case," said Angelia Williams.

"Justice delayed is justice denied. We want to know soon what is going on," said Attorney Barry Silva.

Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg said there's a delay because his office is still interviewing the more than 100 potential witnesses in their investigation.
