With Wednesday being National Clean up Your Room Day and Thursday being Foam Rolling Day have you ever wondered where all of these weird holidays come from?
Marlo Anderson started pulling together these quirky holidays onto the National Day Calendar website four years ago. Now, he makes a living at it as both he and his staff are gatekeepers for which new holidays get added.
"When you really think about it, all holidays are made up,” Anderson said. “So when it's pizza day or coffee day or autonomous vehicle day – whatever your passion is, it will give you a reason to go out and celebrate.”
Some national days show appreciation or raise awareness. But there are also quirky ones like "Talk like a Pirate Day” and "Sneak Some Zucchini on Your Neighbor's Front Porch Day.”
"It’s actually a pretty big deal of those 20,000 applications that we only honor 30 or 35,” said Anderson
20,000 also more than the entire population of the town where Anderson’s based - Mandan, North Dakota.
"We are rural America. We like to celebrate every day and share that with the rest of the country and the world,” Anderson said.
Right now, only applications from companies and organizations get considered – in part, because it costs $2,300 to get a new holiday added.
National Day Calendar does not declare days, weeks or months for individuals, so your birthday isn't getting on there. You can learn more about submitting your own holiday or what national days are coming up at NationalDayCalendar.com.
