The Miami Dolphins will continue to wind down their season when they take on the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
After last week's loss, Miami was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Even before the game, a playoff run was highly improbable however. Miami entered the year with extremely high hopes, but will once again begin its off-season early.
Even without a playoff spot on the line, there is plenty to play for. These last few games could decide the fates of members of the coaching staff, as well as some members of the active roster. Playing hard when the games don't have postseason implications would be a positive sign. If the Dolphins pack it in the last few weeks, it may become hard to justify keeping things status quo.
One man who is sure to be back next year regardless of the remainder of the schedule is Ryan Tannehill. Miami's quarterback has had a disappointing year following the signing of a contract extension. For the first time in his career, Tannehill is set to have a decline in terms of QB rating. Some of the blame falls on the coaching staff including former offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. However, all too often Tannehill has overthrown or under thrown receivers this season even on solid play calls.
The Chargers are 3-10 and are playing out the string just like Miami. This game does have meaning for San Diego however as it could be its last game in its current home. The Chargers may be on the move next year and have no home games remaining on the schedule after this one.
Qualcomm Stadium where this game will be held was the location of one of Miami's worst franchise memories. Back in 1995, the Dolphins held a 15-point advantage over San Diego before falling in the end. That game was during the AFC Divisional Round and it eliminated Miami.
Sunday's game between Miami and San Diego will get underway at 4:25 p.m.
