On the same day of an invitation-only media preview event, a Brightline high-speed train on Friday struck and killed a woman, the Boynton Beach Police Department said.
The woman has been identified as 32-year-old Melissa Lavell, police said. Lavell was apparently crossing the tracks after the guard rails were down in an attempt to make it across before the train approached, a spokesperson said.
Police responded to the incident at about 6:25 p.m. The train was traveling north on the Florida East Coast Railway.
In a statement, police said no one on the train was injured. Earlier in the day, Brightline officials hosted local media outlets and other representatives to display its new high-speed train service.
