Worker's Arm Severed in Auger Accident at Hillsboro Beach Construction Site

A construction worker was airlifted to the hospital after his arm was severed in an auger accident in Hillsboro Beach Thursday, officials said.

The 44-year-old worker was using the industrial auger at a site in the 1100 block of Hillsboro Mile when his right arm became trapped in the drill, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials said.

The force of the drill caused his arm to be completely amputated just below the shoulder. A Hillsboro Police officer quickly applied a tourniquet before paramedics arrived and flew him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.

"Miraculously, the patient was conscious and in stable condition after the traumatic incident, likely due to the swift actions of a Hillsboro Police Officer on the scene who applied a tourniquet and managed the patient’s care before paramedics arrived," BSO Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane said in a statement.
