Dominican Republic Wins 1st Game at World Baseball Classic at Marlins Park

The World Baseball Classic kicked off at Marlins Park in Miami Thursday.

Miami will be hosting the first round of Pool C, which includes the United States, Canada, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic defeated Canada in the first game held Thursday. The final score was 2-9.

Team USA will take the field Friday at 6 p.m. for their opener with Colombia, who is making their first trip to the WBC.

The most anticipated match is likely when the Americans take on the DR Saturday night in a game that has already sold out. The top two teams in the Miami pool will advance to the second round of games next week in San Diego.

2017 marks the third time the worldwide event has been held, with games taking place in Miami each time. The 2009 games were played inside what is now Hard Rock Stadium, while the 2013 games also took place at Marlins Park.
