The world’s biggest hip-hop dance festival has arrived in South Florida for the first time in history.
The international event kicked things off Friday at the Adrienne Arsht Center.
The convention is more than a decade old and it’s the first time it’s been in Miami.
Jonzi D is the organizer behind the break dancing convention. He got it up and running in the United Kingdom 14 years ago.
“My original idea was to bring hip-hop into the theater,” said Jonzi D. “People normally see hip-hop as something on the street, but I knew hip-hop could tell narratives and breaking and popping is as high as any other dance form out there.”
The convention has been hosted in cities around the world. Local artist Rudi Goblin is excited to see it in South Florida.
“It’s a great thing, it’s a beautiful thing,” said Goblin. “I love that they got with the Arsht Center to bring this to Miami. There aren’t many, if any, events like this in Miami, where you get to see the essence of the hip-hop culture and what it embraces.”

Performing has taken Goblin around the world, just as dancers around the world are in Miami this weekend for the event.
The two-day convention isn’t just about performing, it’s also about learning and teaching.
“This is about us getting together and sharing skills, storytelling and emotional stuff, as well as explosive routines.”
From world-famous break dancers, to talents who have been featured on TV and movies, there’s a lot to see at the Adrienne Arsht Center this weekend.
