‘You Need to Learn Your Lesson': Mother Allegedly Leaves Child Inside U-Haul Truck in Hialeah

A good Samaritan bought the seemingly lost, hungry boy a meal at a Wendy's restaurant

A South Florida woman allegedly left her son inside of a U-Haul truck without food or water because her boyfriend didn't want the child in their new apartment, according to a police report.

Amy Lyn Simmons, 36, faces a felony charge of child neglect with no great bodily harm.

On Thursday, a witness told police that he saw the child "walking aimlessly" at the Public Storage located at 7850 W. 4th Avenue in Hialeah at about 5 p.m.

The witness spoke with the child, who said he needed to charge his phone before he walked away.

As the witness was leaving the Public Storage, he noticed the child walking about half a mile away by the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.

The witness asked the child, who was not identified by police, if everything was fine.

"No, and I am hungry," the child replied, according to the police report.

The witness-turned-good Samaritan bought the child a meal at a nearby Wendy's restaurant and asked the child why he was alone.

The child said his mother left him early in the morning with only a pillow and a blanket in the back of the U-Haul truck because the child argues with his younger brother, according to the police report.

"You need to learn your lesson," the mother allegedly told the child.

The good Samaritan then contacted police. The responding officer called Simmons, who works as a medical assistant, and she went to meet with them.

Simmons told the officer that she left the child in the truck because she was in the process of moving and did not want to pay additional fees by adding more miles on the truck.

Simmons was arrested. The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident.
