A youth football league treasurer has turned himself in to authorities on the charge he stole nearly $50,000 from the league’s bank account, according to a Miami-Dade police arrest report.
Police say Guillermo Manuel Chacon, 47, of Miami, embezzled $49,993 from the account of the Miami Xtreme Youth Football League and concealed the theft for more than a year by providing the league falsified bank statements.
Chacon was taken into custody Tuesday after showing up with his attorney at Miami-Dade Police Headquarters, the report said. Chacon was jailed on charges of grand theft, uttering a forged instrument and scheming to defraud, the report said.
Chacon’s Miami attorney, Yery Marerro, couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday despite a message left with staff at her office.

The Miami Xtreme Youth Football League says it grew wary of the treasurer when it stopped hearing from him as bills went unpaid. During a Jan. 26 bank visit, the league learned it had less than $1,000 remaining in both its accounts, the league said.
From August 2011 to December 2012, Chacon gave the league’s board altered bank statements with erroneous balances, so “that they would not be aware of the unauthorized cash withdrawals,” an arrest report said.

The last bank statement given to the board, dated Nov. 1, 2012, showed an account balance of $61,893.18, even though the account actually had $9,489.81, the report said.
Police compared Chacon’s bank statements with unaltered ones from the bank to document the fraud, the report said.

“When the true bank statements were retrieved from JP Morgan Chase, all the bank statements had a different bar code that did not match the altered version provided by Mr. Chacon to the board,” the report said.
When Chacon surrendered to police Tuesday, he invoked his right not to be questioned about the case, the arrest report said.
The football league has since appointed an interim treasurer to replace Chacon, the league said.
