FBI Probes Vandalism at Rhode Island Muslim School

The incident happened at the Islamic School of Rhode Island in West Warwick

The FBI has started a civil rights investigation after a non-profit Muslim school in Rhode Island was vandalized over the weekend.

The incident happened at the Islamic School of Rhode Island in West Warwick.

Doors and windows throughout the school were covered with obscene expletives such as "Die Pig" and "F--- Allah Now This Is A Hate Crime.”

The school begins its February break Monday, but the school could see investigative teams combing the building for evidence in the coming days.

The FBI's Boston Division told NBC in a statement that they have started a civil rights investigation into the incident.

"The FBI takes these matters very seriously and is asking anyone with information about the crime to come forward and report it," the FBI statement read. "Anyone with information should contact the FBI at 1-800-CALLFBI or submit a tip at http://tips.fbi.gov/."

The Council on American Islamic Relations had hoped authorities would investigate the vandalism as a hate crime.

The council, the nation's largest Muslim activist organization, says the attacks on American Muslims, including the murders of three Muslims students at the University of North Carolina, must also be addressed by our nation's leaders.
