Alabama Residents ā€˜Shocked' Over KKK Recruitment Fliers Left on Lawns

Residents in a Mobile, Alabama, neighborhood are upset and "shocked" over fliers left on their lawns calling for members of the community to join the Klu Klux Klan, NBC affiliate WPMI reported.

The fliers, placed inside plastic sandwich bags, wish a happy birthday to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and goes on to state "The blacks have NAACP, the Mexicans have La Raza, the Jews have JDL, and white people have the KKK."

"I picked it up and read it and it pretty much shocked me," a Midtown resident told WPMI.

The man, who asked WPMI to conceal his identity, said more than 50 bags began to appear in the neighborhood Saturday evening.

The flier included a card with a phone number for the Loyal White Knights, a South Carolina-based Klan group "working to secure a future for pure white Americans," according to the organization's website. The phone number directs callers to a recorded "graphic" message about the iconic civil rights leader who was assassinated in 1968, WPMI said.

The card also features a cartoon drawing of a Klansman, dressed in the groups notable frock, with the message "The KKK Wants You."

"It was like a recruitment card you know that people could join this order of the Ku Klux Klan," another resident told the station.

Residents told WPMI that no one appeared to be targeted in the recruitment efforts, however many questioned why their neighborhood was chosen.

"I don't want my children to see something like that. My children are loved and they are safe and that's what is important to us. To see a message like that is very contrary to what we believe," Midtown resident Tricia Butts said.
