Anglican Communion Suspends U.S. Episcopal Church Over Same-Sex Marriage

The Anglican Communion voted Thursday to suspend the U.S. Episcopal Church because it embraces same-sex marriage, NBC News reported.

American Episcopalians and leaders will be stripped of their votes at Anglican conferences and assemblies, won't be allowed to take part in decision-making and can't officially represent the Anglican Communion on interfaith commissions.

Church leaders in the U.S. say this will bring “real pain” and rejection for all Episcopalians, including gay and lesbian disciples.

The tension grew when the U.S. church elected the first gay bishop and voted to allow religious weddings for same-sex couples in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.
