Bronx Trucker Charged in $13,000 Toll-Bridge Scam: Authorities

A Bronx truck driver illegally used a passenger car's electronic pass to breeze through area toll bridges and scam the system for more than $13,000, investigators said Saturday.

Kerron Maittia, 38, is accused of short-changing the toll operation by using a cheaper passenger car E-Z Pass to drive a big rig across bridges, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Maittia was nabbed Friday morning as he crossed the George Washington Bridge, said Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

Officers were watching for toll cheats when they recognized the license plate on Maittia's truck from more than 100 other toll violations, he said. Agency records show Maittia pulled the scam twice a day on most weekdays.

Maittia was charged with theft of services and toll evasion.

He told officers that he had financial problems and was trying to save money, Pentangelo said.

It was unclear whether Maittia had a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
