Roof of Staten Island Car Dealership Partly Collapses, 1 Dies: NYPD

The concrete roof of a former car dealership building has partially collapsed on Staten Island, killing a construction worker who was found in the debris.

The roof collapsed around 8:15 a.m. Friday at a building on a service road off the Shore Expressway. Four construction workers were inside, but three were able to get out by themselves.

Police and firefighters extricated the fourth worker, who was taken to Richmond University Medical Center where he died, police said.

The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Delfino Jesus Velazquez Mendizabal.

The building was an old Dana dealership that was being demolished, according to Ironhorse Development, which is part of the construction project.

The new Dana dealership is next door.

The city Buildings Department is responding to the collapse but has no immediate information.
