Three people have died and at least 558 have been infected in an outbreak of salmonella linked to imported cucumbers, federal officials said Tuesday.
Since the recall,more infections are being diagnosed by laboratory tests, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Of the infected consumers, 112 have been hospitalized and more than half of them are children.
The recalled cucumbers were distributed in at least 21 other states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina and Utah. Illness from the cucumbers have been reported in 33 states, according to the CDC.
The Food and Drug Administration, CDC and state and local officials continue to investigate a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Poona linked to “slicer” cucumbers, supplied by the San Diego-based Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce and grown in Mexico.
This type of cucumber can also be called “American” cucumbers. Among people for whom information is available, illnesses started on dates ranging from July 3, 2015 to September 11, 2015. Ill people range in age from less than 1 year to 99, with a median age of 16, according to the CDC.
