Girl, 7, Shot After Soccer Practice by ‘Paranoid' Family Friend

A gunman fatally shot a 7-year-old girl and left her mother in serious condition Friday before turning the gun on himself, police in Michigan said.

Emma Watson Nowling and her mother, Sharon Watson, 37, both of Belleville, were leaving a sports arena after soccer practice when they were shot in their vehicle, according to a Taylor Police Department news release, NBC News reported.

It named the shooter as Timothy Nelson Obeshaw, 57, of Taylor, southwest of Detroit. Police said they were told Obeshaw was a friend of the family and had been staying with Watson and her boyfriend.

"Police still do not have a motive for the shootings, other than witnesses and family members told police that in the past year Obeshaw had started becoming mentally unstable and paranoid," police said.
