Northern California Man Arrested For Allegedly Shooting, Killing Mother After Video Game Argument

Police have arrested a Northern California man who they say shot his mother to death after he began yelling during a video game.

Matthew Nicholson, 28, of Ceres was taken into custody Thursday night on suspicion of murder. It's unclear whether he has an attorney.

Police called to Nicholson's home found his 68-year-old mother with a head wound. She died at a hospital.

Lydia Nicholson went to check on her son in his bedroom after he became upset while playing video games and began shouting, police said.

Nicholson argued with his mother, broke his video game headset, then blamed her, according to police. He also threatened to shoot both his parents.

He allegedly grabbed a gun, fired two rounds into the wall of their house and then shot his mother. His 81-year-old father wrestled away the firearm.

Nicholson fled and drove off to a relative's house in Riverbank. There, his vehicle was stopped by officers.

He faces a homicide charge and has been booked into the Stanislaus County Jail, where he is being held on no bail.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.

People with information about the case are asked to contact Det. Bryan Ferreira at (209) 538-5616.
