Police: Men Posing as Cops Rob Seniors in Gold Coast

Chicago Police are warning residents in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood after two men posed as police officers and stole money from two senior citizens.

Police say one offender calls the elderly victims and tells them that a relative is under arrest, according to a community alert issued by police. The victim is told that their help is needed in the investigation and they need to withdraw a large sum of money from their bank, the alert said.

A second offender meets the elderly victim outside a bank or designated location to pick up the money. The fake cops tell the victims they can’t tell anyone about what they’re doing so as not to hurt the investigation, police said. Sometimes they re-contact the victims for even more money, according to authorities.

One offender is described as a black male, 40-55 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and between 160-170 pounds, the alert said.

The second offender is also a black male, between the ages of 60 and 66, 5 feet 10 inches tall with “salt and pepper hair.”

Chicago Police remind residents that they will never ask for money for an investigation or for any other reason. They advise residents to ask for identification as all law enforcement officers will carry identification and will show it.

Anyone with information surrounding the crimes should contact the Financial Crimes Unit at (312) 746-9661.
