Police: D.C. Officer Shoots Would-Be Robber

A southeast Washington woman will soon trade a hospital bed for a jail cell after she was shot while  allegedly trying to rob an off-duty police officer, Prince George's County police said.

The victim, a Metropolitan Police Department officer, had just returned to his home in the 6000 block of Hope Drive in Prince George's County when he was approached by a woman around 4:15 a.m. Sunday. Investigators say the suspect, who was armed with a shotgun, was shot by the homeowner after making demands.

The injured suspect got into a nearby car and fled the scene.

Police say a short time later, detectives were called to a D.C. hospital regarding a person who walked in with a gunshot wound. It was determined that the patient was linked to the robbery. Police have  identified the suspect as 26-year-old Ashley Tomika McCrae.

McCrae will face charges related to the attempted armed robbery when she's released, police said. She remains hospitalized for injuries that are not life-threatening.

Authorities say the gun and vehicle used in the crime have been recovered.

The victim was not injured.
