Remains Found at Bottom of North Carolina Lake May Be Man Missing 43 Years

Authorities in North Carolina believe human remains found inside a green 1968 Pontiac at the bottom of a lake in North Carolina may be those of a man who has been missing for 43 years, NBC News reported.

On Tuesday, authorities in Caldwell County pulled the car from the lake and the found human remains, along with 44-year-old Air Force retiree Amos Shook's wallet and identification inside of the vehicle. Using sonar technology, the local fire department found the car submerged in 30 feet of water.

“He had gone out for the evening and never came home. There was no trace of him after that," Det. Sgt. Shelly Hartley of the Caldwell County Sheriff's Office told NBC News.

Hartley said it would take some time for the coroner's office to positively identify the remains as Shook's and determine how he died.
