A stabbing suspect shot by a contract security guard at Union Station has died.
A man and woman were arguing in the Kaiser Permanente Capitol Hill Medical Center in the Security and Exchange Commission building near Union Station when the man stabbed the woman, police said.
The man was identified Sunday as William Thomas Wilson Jr., 57, of southeast Washington.
A security guard under contract to the SEC chased the suspect from the building into Union Station. The guard tried to subdue the man near the McDonald's restaurant at Gate L, police said. The man turned and pointed the knife at the security guard, lunging at him, according to police. The guard fired one shot, hitting the man in the side, officials said.
“Obviously, with this being 9/11, fears were heightened and escalated,” D.C. police Cmdr. Jeff Brown said. But officials said they believe the event was the result of a domestic dispute.
Crowds fled the building.
"We just ran out the door with everybody else," Terrie Bowman, a visitor from Wisconsin, told News4's Chris Gordon. "People just started thundering behind us. It was scary. Being 9/11 it was absolutely terrifying."

Union Station was briefly cleared while police and emergency crews rushed to the scene. Everyone was allowed to return.
The man was taken to a hospital and died later Friday.
The woman was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from the stabbing, police said.
The incident is under investigation.
