WATCH: First-Responders Pull Man From Burning Car in Suitland

A man was trapped inside a burning car in Suitland, Maryland, early Friday and dramatic video shows Prince George's County police and firefighters running to his rescue.

Police and firefighters received a call at about 12:30 a.m. reporting a car accident on the 2700 block of Lakewood Street and a man trapped inside one of the vehicles on fire, a Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman said Friday afternoon.

Police arrived at the scene moments before firefighters. Officer Michael Morris said he was the first to run towards the flames.

"Watching my fellow officers go up and bust windows out and try to save this guy's life, it was remarkable," he said Friday evening.

Footage from a dashboard-mounted camera shows the car fully engulfed in flames. Officer Nicholas Clayton used his baton to lift up the hot door handle and open the car door as members of the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department arrived.

"It was an intense fire, the heat was just overwhelming," Clayton said. "The tires were popping. Explosions were going off in the car."

"We were trying to save his life," Officer Luis Alba de Jesus said.

Volunteer Firefighter Daniel Collins reached into the fire and pulled out the victim as other crew members hosed down the blaze. Paramedics rushed the victim to a burn unit with serious burns, the fire department said. The man is expected to live.

"I believe if it wasn't for me and my fellow officers, there's a good chance that he probably wouldn't have survived," Officer Jeremy Burch said.

Information on the cause of the fire was not immediately released.

"Congratulations on a job well done to the police officers, firefighters and medics that worked quickly and cohesively, without regard for their own personal safety, to rescue the victim and save his life," the fire department spokesman said. "Job well done."
