Drivers taking to rural Illinois roads may be used to seeing "deer crossing" signs, but in one central Illinois town, there’s a new sign that may cause motorists to do a double take.
In Button Township, a “Suicidal Deer” sign was installed just south of the intersection at Ford County roads 2250 East and 200 North.
The yellow road sign was installed by the Ford County Highway Department more than a month ago, the Ford County Record reported.
Button Township Highway Commissioner Ron Hilligoss told the publication the sign was installed after Hilligoss’ nephew sent him a photo of a similar sign in Colorado. Hilligoss said he ordered the sign “because it gets your attention.”
Four signs were reportedly ordered, but only one has been installed so far.
According to the Ford County Record, 33 vehicle-versus-deer collisions were reported to the Ford County Sheriff’s Office in 2015. So far, no such collisions have been reported in 2016.
