Glam Slam: Wardrobe Reinvention

It seems like there are so many mornings that I look at my closet and am bored by the same ol' clothes staring back at me. But as I've often said lately, so many of us are not in a position to just go out and shop!

So how do we reinvent our wardrobe?

People StyleWatch's Contributing Editor Lori Bergamotto gives this rule of thumb: "Don't typecast your clothes." Instead, make them multi-task… with these four simple ways!

MIXING YOUR SEASONS: "70 percent of what you have can be worn all year round - just by adding and subtracting," Lori says. That's not to say you're going to wear wool in the middle of August! But certain fabrics, like cotton, can take you from season to season. A dress can be worn in the Summer with sandals but then paired with black tights in the Fall - a look Sienna Miller has pulled off on the red carpet. And you can also throw a blazer over a dress to take it into cooler temperatures. Sienna, Blake Lively and Kate Bosworth are all masters of this trick!

MIXING UP DRESSY AND CASUAL: "Women don't always think to do this but the payoff is huge. Most women have a pair of fancy heels, a clutch or a necklace they have on hand for black tie events." Well don't wait for that once-a-year wedding! Instead Lori suggests pairing these pieces with a great pair of jeans, a white ribbed tank and a cute cardigan. It's an adorable date night outfit with just the right amount of flair!

MIXING COLORS: Lori stresses, "you don't want to look like a rainbow" but that shouldn't stop you from putting together colors. Start simply: "Whatever bold colored solid dress you have in your closet - purple, blue, green - add a soft pastel complimentary cardigan over it. Then add a touch of a third color, such as a belt." But keep the palette no more than 3-4 colors! SJP got this right: pairing a navy satin tank and black pants with a bright pink cropped jacket. Capping it off, a yellow pin!

MIXING UP TOPS AND DRESSES: Long, tunic tops have been a big trend the last few seasons. Lori suggests turning last year's shirt into this season's dress. But if you pay attention to nothing else here, pay attention to this: the hem of the shirt-turned-dress should fall within an inch of the kneecaps and not a bit shorter!! Otherwise this is just not an acceptable length for a dress! Also, "pair with flats, which are more conservative and age appropriate." And by all means, if you are at all concerned about showing too much skin, throw on leggings or a pair of tights. Blake Lively belted a black button down top over tights… and voila! Red carpet ready!
