Globes Honors Fisher, Reynolds in Special Segment

Hollywood honored two of its recently departed stars, mother and daughter Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, with a special segment during Sunday night's Golden Globes ceremony.

Fisher died Dec. 27 after having a heart attack on a flight the week prior, and her mother Reynolds died the following day after being hospitalized.

Both accomplished actresses were widely known for their most famous roles: Reynolds for starring with Gene Kelly in “Singin’ in the Rain,” and Fisher for playing Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films.

Their relationship for years ranged from strained to non-existent, but late in life they became much closer, helping one another with their struggles.

Reynolds lost one husband to Elizabeth Taylor, and two other husbands took her for millions.

Fisher struggled from a relatively early age with addiction and mental illness.

Reynolds' son Todd Fisher said his sister Carrie’s death was "just too much" for his mother.

"She said, 'I want to be with Carrie,'" Fisher told The Associated Press by phone from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Reynolds had just died after being rushed there earlier in the day. "And then she was gone."

Todd Fisher tweeted Sunday in response to the Golden Globes tribute segment.

The actresses were both laid to rest this past week. Some of Fisher's ashes were interred with her mother in the Hollywood Forever cemetery in Los Angeles.
