Israel Shells Gaza; Strike Hits Near U.N. School

An airstrike hit just outside the gate of a U.N. school in Gaza on Sunday, killing at least 10 Palestinian civilians. It was condemned by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as “yet another gross violation of international humanitarian law.” The airstrike came as Israel intensified attacks in the area along the border with Egypt after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to keep pressure on Hamas. The conflict has claimed the lives of 1,700 Palestinians, mainly civilians, as well as nearly 70 Israelis, almost all soldiers.
