Kirsten Dunst Awash in “Melancholia”

Kirsten Dunst is the latest addition to what has to be Lars von Trier's most mainstream cast to date, for his upcoming film about an impending global apocalypse.

Dunst will be taking over the lead role that had been offered to Penelope Cruz earlier this year, reported Deadline Hollywood.

"Melancholia," about a giant planet whose steady approach is threatening Earth, will also star Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgård and Stellan Skarsgård.

The film will be “a mix of spectacular, cinematic imagery with Dogme-style hand-held camerawork,” according to producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen. And "romantic, in a Lord Byron sort of way.”

"No more happy endings!" was all that von Trier had to say about the film last year. Shooting on the $7 million film will run from July to September.

Could it be that Dunst is making something of a comeback? Her career had been sliding steadily into the abyss with the fortunes flagging Spider-Man franchise. But now, she's not only been cast by von Trier, a short film she directed and co-wrote, "Bastard," is showing at Tribeca and then Cannes.
