Man Killed in Hang Glider Crash Near Sylmar

A man was killed in a hang gliding crash in the Kagel Canyon area above Sylmar on Saturday, sheriff’s officials said.

The man was with four others who hang glided from a mountain peak known as Hang Glider Point. He was later identified as Markus Michael Albert Schaedler, 59, of North Hollywood.

Authorities were called about 6:20 p.m. when the victim failed to show up at a rally point, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Bill Jaeger said.

A sheriff's helicopter search was conducted and the hang glider was found along with the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Jaeger said.

Crews were working to recover Schaedler's body Saturday night.

Schaedler was described as an experienced hang glider.
