New Britain Man Testifies He Used Drugs Before Killing 90-Year-Old Father

A Connecticut man has testified in court that he consumed crack, powder cocaine and Percocet pills before killing and dismembering his 90-year-old father.

Jan Gawlik, of New Britain, faces charges of murder and assault on the elderly in the death of his father Joseph and an attack on his 74-year-old mother in October 2011.

West Haven Police have arrested a man suspected of stealing expensive seafood and steaks and said he might also be wanted in several other towns.

The New Britain Herald reports that Alec Buchanan, a former associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine, said in New Britain Superior Court it wasn't drugs but a "psychotic illness" that drove Gawlik. He interviewed Gawlik and others.

A Yale student woke up to find a burglar in his bedroom. What he did next helped police make an arrest.

Buchanan testified Monday that Gawlik told him he used an ornamental sword and a kitchen knife to stab his father while hearing voices to "dismember" him.

Gawlik's public defender Michael Isko says he'll seek an "extreme emotional disturbance" defense.
