Aurora Victim Recovers After Shot to Head

A 22-year-old woman who had been shot in the head during the Aurora, Colo. shooting rampage is well on the road to recovery, prompting doctors to call her case "a miracle," NBC News reported. Petra Anderson took a shotgun pellet to the head, passing through her brain before lodging in the back of her head. The pellet bypassed the brain's many blood vessels and key sections controlling vital functions, which saved Anderson's life and spared her from severe injury. Although Anderson continues to have difficulties with memory, speech, language and organizing thoughts, after four months of occupational and speech therapies she can now speak in full sentences and process information better. "I would say this is definitely a miracle," said Dr. Michael Rauzzino, the neurosurgeon who operated on Anderson. In fact, Anderson, an aspiring music professor, was even able to play the violin for her dying mother. Rauzzino acknowledges that Anderson has made remarkable progress, which bodes well for her. "She's going to make an excellent recovery from this and hopefully get back towards normal," Rauzzino said. The movie theater shooting left 12 dead and 58 injured.
