George McGovern in Stable Condition After Fall

Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern is "alert and resting comfortably" at a South Dakota hospital after suffering a head injury, doctors said. McGovern was being treated after he tripped, fell and hit his head on the pavement. His daughter, Ann McGovern, said he was being treated at a Sioux Falls hospital after a helicopter flew him from Mitchell, S.D., where McGovern was set for a live C-SPAN interview at a library which bears his name. The 89-year-old former senator was “bleeding profusely,” according to family and friends on the scene. "He had just walked from home to the center. He lives literally just across the street," Ann McGovern told The Associated Press.
