Gingrich's Resilience Helps Romney Campaign

Although Mitt Romney's campaign has spent considerable sums of money trying to squash Newt Gingrich's presidential ambitions, the former House Speaker's survival in the GOP race has recently given the former Massachusetts governor a political advantage, The New York Times reported. According to the Times, Gingrich's persistence has allowed Romney to skirt a one-on-one competition with Rick Santorum. Gingrich, who sold himself as a conservative alternative to Romney before Santorum's recent surge, has effectively ensured that Romney has a fighting chance of winning Tuesday's Alabama primary by splintering the conservative vote, the Times reported.
