Body of Snowboarder Found in Collapsed Ore. Ice Tunnel

Rescuers on Sunday recovered the body of a Colorado snowboarder who was killed when an ice tunnel collapsed on Oregon's Mount Hood, NBC News reported. Collin Backowski, 25, was accompanied by five other friends when the collapse hit Saturday afternoon, officials said. The other five, all in their 20s, were uninjured and tried to dig Backowski out but were unable to break through the snow. Backowski’s body was found buried under 8 to 10 feet of snow and ice, said Lieutenant Tiffany Peterson, a spokeswoman for the Hood River Country Sheriff’s office. Peterson said that 12 people used chainsaws and other hand tools to remove "several tons of debris" from the trapped snowboarder's body. “He chose to live out there on the edge with the snowboarding and I obviously wanted more from him,” said Collin Backowski's father, John Backowski. “I would never try to take it away from him. He loved it.”
