A woman driving with a young child in the car tried to ram through a White House barricade Thursday, then led authorities on a chase to the U.S. Capitol, where she was fatally shot, police said.

The incident began at about 2:30 p.m. at the White House gates at 15th and E streets NW, NBC News confirmed. The woman, identified as Miriam Carey, 34, of Stamford, Conn., was shot at the scene and killed.
