Obama, Romney Veer Off-Script

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were both forced off-script this week by forces arguably out of their control, underscoring how opaque Romney's personal character remains to the public, NBC's First Read team reported. Obama dominated political discourse when he announced Wednesday his support for gay marriage, spurred largely by Vice President Joe Biden's comments over the weekend. But a Washington Post report on Romney's high school years pointed to just how comparatively murky his personal narrative has been — and how murky he seems to want it to remain. According to First Read, Romney needs to define his own story more clearly, since he has largely disowned his record as governor of Massachusetts and declines to discuss his strong religious faith. The stakes for Romney are high, too, because his path to 270 delegates on Election Day is narrower than the president's.
