Carlos the Jackal on Trial for 4 Attacks in France

Carlos the Jackal, known as the "Osama bin Laden of his day," is back on trial. The 65-year-old Venezuelan, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, arrived in Paris court Monday to stand trial for four terrorist attacks on trains in France, CNN reports. He is accused of instigating bombings that killed 11 people and injured more than 140 others in the 1980s. Ramirez is already serving a life sentence for a triple murder in 1975 after he was caught in Sudan in 1994. A Marxist with a Che Guevara beret, "he was the symbol of international leftist terrorism," describes terrorism expert Francois-Bernard Hughe. Ramirez told Europe 1 radio last month he was "in a combative mood."
