Parent Raises Concerns Over Racial Slur Read Aloud in Class

A South Windsor, Connecticut, resident is asking the school district to issue formal guidelines about using racial language in classrooms after she says she wasn't notified that racial slurs would be read aloud in her daughter's eighth-grade class.

Sandra Baker, who is black, tells the Hartford Courant her daughter was blindsided when the slur was spoken 16 times as the class at Timothy Edwards Middle School read the personal accounts of slaves.

Baker says the same thing happened in her oldest daughter's class in 2014.

She says she's concerned about the lack of communication between the district and parents.

Superintendent Kate Carter said Monday the district had failed Baker's children by not notifying Baker of the material.

Carter says a letter has been sent to parents outlining the curriculum's topics.
