Shoplifting Suspect Shoots Himself After Standoff at Georgia Wal-Mart

A man shot himself after a brief standoff with police officers at a Wal-Mart in Union City, Georgia, according to a statement from the Union City Police Department.

Officers responded to a shoplifting call at the store at 3:09 p.m. ET.

“During officers’ arrival, the detained subject produced a pistol, that he had concealed on himself,” the statement said.

The suspect shot himself, resulting in serious injuries. Officers provided immediate medical assistance to the suspect, who was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The suspect remains in critical condition. 

No officers or shoppers were wounded, police told NBC station WXIA. 

The store reopened and is operating normally.
