Tuesday Watch List: The Voice Arrives

Welcome to Watch List, where we identify five things on TV to watch while you stay at home and celebrate the temporary lifting of the NFL lockout. WOOHOO! YAY! For once, the legal system works! It almost makes up for OJ! LET’S GO!

THE VOICE – 9:00PM (NBC) I’ve read so much about the judging panel of NBC’s new voice talent show that it completely slipped by me that the whole thing is being presided over by Carson Daly. Yes, Carson Daly! This is NBC’s big attempt to knock off “American Idol,” and the twist here is that all judging will be done blindly. So even if you look like a bridge troll, your pretty angel voice can get you through to the next round. The clear intent here is to have a number of Susan Boyle moments, when the singer steps out from behind the curtain and you’re like OMG! I TOTALLY DIDN’T THINK SHE’D LOOK LIKE THAT! And then everyone cries. Your judges are Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine of Maroon 5. I saw these guys all cover Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” as a promo for this show, and I have to say: It wasn’t bad! My guess is you’re in for a mix of interesting voices, odd behavior, and moments of brazen awkwardness. Will it be enough to topple “Idol”? ANTICIPATION: HIGH!

GLEE – 8:00PM (FOX) Time for another Lady Gaga-themed episode of the hit FOX musical this evening. You get a cover of “Born This Way,” from the new album due from the superstar at the end of next month. You also get a cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know,” for reasons that escape me. ANTICIPATION: MESSAGEY!

DANCING WITH THE STARS – 8:00PM (FOX) Your results show tonight includes performances from New Kids on the Block with Backstreet Boys, along with Pia Toscano, the fetching young lass who was booted off of “American Idol” too early. Odds she ends up being a contestant on this show? Oh, I think you know the answer. ANTICIPATION: PIA MY PANTS!

BLACK IN LATIN AMERICA – 8:00PM (PBS) Skip Gates travels to Cuba to take a look at African ancestry among the local population. Maybe have a beer summit with Castro. ANTICIPATION: HISTORY!

BIZARRE FOODS WITH ANDREW ZIMMERN – 9:00PM (Travel Channel) Zimmern also travels to Cuba tonight, to dine on local jungle rat. Beer and jungle rat summit! ANTICIPATION: DELISH!
