American Luger Hamlin Misses Podium at Olympic Swan Song

Erin Hamlin is retiring after these games

American Erin Hamlin finished the last run of her luge career on Tuesday and knew she'd need help if she wanted to add to her medal collection.

But other competitors at the Pyeongchang Olympics didn't oblige, leaving the defending bronze medalist in sixth place, while leader Natalie Geisenberger of Germany, defending her own gold, cruised to a repeat victory.

German Dajana Eitberger came in seond and Canadian Alex Gough came third.

Hamlin is retiring after these Games. She had gone into the third and fourth rounds on Tuesday in fifth place, but saying, "Anything can happen."

Geisenberger, who saw fellow German star Felix Loch skid midway through the final run of the men's race and lose his shot at a third consecutive gold medal, had no such trouble.

The final round also American Emily Sweeney have a scary-looking crash, bouncing wildly out of control, but was able to walk off the track after recieving medical attention.

Sweeney had a bad wreck in training on Sunday and had been mindful of it Monday, finishing the first two runs in 15th place.

Geisenberger is the third woman to win consecutive Olympic golds, joining Steffi Martin Walter (1984, 1988) and Sylke Otto (2002, 2006).
