7 Dead After Winter Storm Slams East Coast

The winter storm that dumped freezing rain and snow on the U.S. Monday is being blamed for at least seven traffic-related deaths and thousands of flight cancellations, NBC News reported. Snowy driving conditions led to accidents across the Mississippi Valley up the Atlantic Coast. A man walking in Reading, Pennsylvania, was struck and killed by a snowplow on Monday morning, and another man driving his pickup truck on slick Virginia roads died after sliding into an embankment. The storm also caused 3,100 flights cancellations and more than 4,700 delays on Monday, according to the tracking site FlightAware.com. At least five states — New Jersey, Tennessee, Delaware, Virginia and Mississippi — declared a state of emergency because of the snowy weather. Frigid temperatures more typical of January will last east of the Rocky Mountains for the next few days, according to the National Weather Service.
