Yadina Morales Charged in Infant's Drunken Breastfeeding Death: Sheriff

A baby girl died Saturday morning after her intoxicated mother passed out while breastfeeding the child in Hagerstown, Md.

Yadina Morales, 22, woke up before 7 a.m. to find her 2-month-old daughter underneath her and unresponsive in a home in the 11200 block of Scarlet Oak Drive, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

"We found that the mother was highly intoxicated and had actually been breastfeeding the child and passed out and ultimately smothered the child," Sheriff Douglas Mullendore said.

The child was taken to Meritus Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Her body was taken to the medical examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Morales also was taken to Meritus Medical Center as a precaution before she was booked. Morales was charged with manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment and other charges. She is out on bond.

Two other children in the home at the time are in the custody of child services.
